Khadi & Village Industries Acitivities
(A) KHADI INDUSTRIES :
(a) Khadi - The Sarvodaya Samiti is running three Khadi spinning centers and two weaving centers. One hundred twenty artisans are associated with the Samiti under Khadi programme. Yarn is produced from the cotton sliver on M.N.C. charakhas at Dharamgarh and weaving center at Dharmagarh. We have also a Silk production centre at Village Sagarpalli in Sonepur district.
The Samiti is also managing Khadi Bhandars (shops) in Koraput in Koraput district & Dharamgarh in Kalahandi district for sales of Khadi and village Industries products. The Samiti has also sales Khadi, Silk and V.I products in whole sales within and outside state of Orissa. The Samiti is also provided work sheds to its artisans (spinners and weavers) in Dharamgarh subdivision and a Common work shed for spinning at Dharamgarh with the help from KVIC. We also produce readymade Khadi Garments for the customers.
As the cotton sliver is not available in our state, we have procured it from Central Sliver Plant of KVIC, Sehore, Madhya Pradesh & Hazipur (Bihar).
(b) Khadi Reform Development Programme (KRDP): The Sarvodaya Samiti is implementing the KRDP in Dharamgarh sub-division of Kalahandi district. Spinners (50) were given training on operating the NMC (8 Spindle Charkha) at Dharamgarh by professional trainer from Khadi & Village Industries Commission, Bhubaneswar. During the year the Samiti has completed the Common Facilities Center (CFC) at Dharamgarh and started renovation of two sales outlets one at Koraput and other at Dharamgarh under KRDP programme.
(B) VILLAGE INDUSTRIES:
(a) BEEKEEPING - Koraput district being the main area of flora and forest, we have trained farmers to take up Beekeeping as one of the incomes generating activities. At Gandhi Nagar, Koraput we are running a Beekeeping training center. Some of the Beekeepers have started Mallifera bee colonies in Koraput district.
We have installed a Honey Processing Plant and Bottling Plant with a capacity of 100kg per day in Koraput for the benefit of the Beekeepers with the help of Khadi and Village Industries Commission under the UNDP Beekeeping programme. Now the farmers and Beekeeper are processing and bottling their honey before selling in the market. The quality as well as the demand for the processed honey has been increased in the market.
The Samiti has been helping the farmers/Beekeepers in processing & marketing of honey in Khadi Bhandars within and outside the state.
(b) RURAL INDUSTRY SERVICE CENTRE (RISC) - The Samiti has set up a Rural Industry Service Centre at Gandhi Nagar, Koraput for the farmers of this locality. This is to provide service to the farmers cultivating Nizer seeds (oil seed) to extract oil from it for consumption purpose. This is a common facility centre for the farmers growing Nizer in Koraput. We have also given training to 25 nos of farmers for using the RISC for oil extraction. The RISC is supported by the Khadi & Village Industries Commission, Bhubaneswar. The Sarodaya Samiti is extracting Nizer Oil and Mustard Oil in the processing unit and sale in the local market.
(c) TURMERIC, PALUA & SPICES - Turmeric is locally cultivated by the tribal farmers. The Samiti is processed and packed the Turmeric, Palua, Coffee, Small Millets, Ragi & Spices through the Mahila Mandal and market it in Khadi Bhandars and other outlets. Under this programme we want to avoid the distress sale of the turmeric at a throwaway price and also to provide work to the SHGs formed by the Samiti.
